AIAA Autonomous Drone

We are the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics at SJSU! Our club stands to give engineering students professional networking opportunities, and hands-on experience in projects using knowledge learned in the classroom. Many companies work alongside us to provide students with tours, workshops, lectures, and other valuable connections which we all will benefit from in our future. We make sure everyone who joins has all of the required information and guidance to be on track towards becoming a successful engineer.

This is an autonomous drone that will be responsible for delivering 6 lightweight nodes to the peak of a volcano in Mexico, flying 7.5 kilometers distance and a 4900 feet elevation difference. The materials and components we are using must be capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions, carrying lots of weight, and flying the entire distance required, multiple times in a row. For this reason, we seek funding to bring this high-tech drone to life, and to give our students the experience of a lifetime, even while enduring the challenges of Covid-19.

Because of the lockdown and pandemic, our team has had a lot of time to do research, test planning, and detailed designing of our system and structure. With the help of our community and supporters, this vehicle will come to life and provide our students with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in which they will be able to see the success of their hard work pay off.

Levels
Choose a giving level

$50

Intern

This amount will be used for certain parts responsible for the communication from the drone to the ground. Some of these parts may be the drone camera, VTX (video transmitter), or any antennas on the drone. Donors at this level will receive a personal thank you email.

$100

Engineer

This amount will be used to construct the frame of the drone. Our PA12 + Carbon Fiber filament costs around $88 per unit, therefore this donation will account for half of the drone frame. Donors at this level will receive a personal thank you email and a team photo.

$250

Lead Engineer

A donation of this amount will account for the large LiPo battery we are using to power our drone. The battery is the most important part of the drone because it provides power for all necessary functions such as take-off, hovering, payload deployment, and the motors keeping the drone in the air. Donors at this level will receive a personal thank you email, a team photo, and a thank you on our website.

$500

Project Manager

A donation of this amount will account for multiple pieces of hardware required for the drone and for part testing. These include a power meter for our video transmitter, battery chargers/ dischargers/ receivers, controllers, and the FPV goggles our pilot will use. Donors at this level will receive a personal thank you email, a team photo, a thank you on our website, and their company name/logo on our website.

$1,000

Chief Engineer

A donation of a thousand dollars would help in all areas of the drone. Most importantly, it could cover the cost of all motors, propellers, electronic speed controllers, and testing specific to these parts. Donors at this level will receive a personal thank you email, a team photo, a thank you on our website and their company name/logo on our website, and a name/logo on the frame of our drone.
